The AI Boom: Game-Changer or Just Another Yellow Elephant?
For those of us who’ve been in tech long enough to remember BlackBerrys (and maybe sleeping with them under your pillow—no judgment), the industry is full of hits and misses. The Internet? Game-changer. The iPhone? Revolution. Big Data? Meh. Remember Hadoop and its yellow elephant mascot? Cute, but did it actually change your life? Nope. Now, the buzz is all about Generative AI tools like ChatGPT. The question is: is this a transformational boom, or are we about to adopt yet another tech trend that makes us wonder, "Why did I buy that conference t-shirt?"
Generative AI feels different, kind of like the iPhone— a tool that’s actually here to work with us. Think of it as your really smart but overly caffeinated assistant that never sleeps. It takes natural language (yes, the way you’d type if no one was grading you), processes it using large language models, and spits out content and insights in seconds that can make you feel like a genius. This is the magic of hybrid intelligence, where humans and machines team up. You bring the creativity, judgment, and ability to ask why AI wrote that email in Comic Sans. Generative AI handles the grunt work, like finding the right words for your marketing copy—or your personalized email.
That said, actual adoption seems to be slower than the giant hype of the past two years. And we’re definitely not close to the "robots who take out the trash" phase of AI yet—sorry, Jetsons fans. Until AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) becomes real, the focus needs to stay on human-centeredness. Generative AI is an innovation that amplifies our strengths; it does not try to replace us. If we get this right, generative AI could be the boom that changes how we work, think, and create, with an emphasis on the create or getting started. It crushes the “staring at a blank piece of paper” problem that we’ve all faced whether writing a personalized email, building a prospect or customer presentation, or creating a gameplan for, well, anything.
If we do not try, well… Generative AI could be another Big Data yellow elephant. But, more likely, this is an iPhone type moment, and you’ll want to be at the forefront by experimenting with it for the most straight-forward initial applications.
